Matters of Interest

Late Claims Payment

As you are aware, the State of Illinois is very slow in releasing funds to pay your claims for medical expenses submitted by the doctors and hospitals that you visit. They are responsible for paying, and will, but it is just a matter of time. Currently, the release time is about six months from processed date.

We recommend that if you receive a statement showing a balance due, call the provider and explain that you have the State of Illinois group insurance. Ask them if they are willing to wait for the carrier to pay. If not, your choice is to make payment arrangements or pay the amount in full and follow up to ensure that the provider refunds that amount to you when the carrier pays.

We are willing to help you with making these calls if you would like us to help. We will need a copy of the statement, showing the provider with their address and telephone number. We will make the calls and follow-up to ensure that the carrier has paid. If you have made a personal payment, we will ensure that the provider sends a refund to you.

Social Security Offset Removed

Social Security Offset Removed   Public Act 095-1043 removed the social security offset on survivor benefits, effective July 1, 2009.  Governor Quinn signed the new legislation passed by the General Assembly.

STEPS TO TAKE WHEN A RETIREE PASSES AWAY

A qualified (Husband, Wife, Power of Attorney) person should contact the appropriate Retirement System by writing or telephone.  The telephone number and address for specific Systems may be found below.

Contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY for hearing and speech impaired 1-800-325-0778) for instructions.  A copy of the death certificate will be necessary.

Keep in mind that the Retirement System will request the Social Security number of the retiree for efficiency.  In addition, if writing the Retirement System, copies of a marriage certificate (if a survivor is left behind) and the death certificate will be required.
